I'm looking for opinions on the benefits of Hpa as opposed to co2 I want to know if switching to hpa will require modifying my markers and what kind of tanks I will need

No it wont and yes make the switch, co2 has varying pressures were as hpa or lpa runs at a constant pressure so its makes your shot more consistent. Co2 cause more wear on your internals, air is easier on the marker. And lastly air is cheaper. Granted the tanks cost more but you get more shots per tank depending on the size on top of that every field I have been at you have to pay per fill on co2 were as air you just pay the $5 or what ever and its all day air.
if you want to save some money on a tank look on PBAZ a lot of guys are selling tanks for decent prices and at worst you might need to get a hydro test done which MPS can do for $40 I think if not then less. If you want one of the huge tanks 45/110 then you are going to need to hit a store.
Hope this helps bro.

One thing you need to be careful of. Make sure you get a tank with a high pressure output. I assume you're running Co2 on your current rig, meaning you have a relativly high operating pressure. If you get a tank running low output your marker is going to be very under-powered.
Example: Buddy of mine was running an A5 with a flatline on Co2. Made the switch to HPA and bought a tank running about 400 psi output. His marker was firing so slow you could practically catch the paintballs as they went sailing by! He traded in the tank for one with a regulator putting out 800-850 psi and never had the problem again.
Low output is fine for markers with lower operating pressures, ex. ions, egos, shockers, ect.
High output is generally for anything blowback. Spyders, Tippmanns, ect.
Hope this helps!

Actually ION's dont run LP they run HP, just an FYI so you dont run in to that problem your buddy had lol. But you are right usually if you buy one brand new they will ask you but if you are buying one used its a good idea to make sure.

An Ions operating pressure is 180 psi from the factory. I think i'm running mine around 120-130 after the upgrades I put into it (freakin' money pit!). Last I checked thats concidered low pressure.

Its low pressure but you couldnt run that with a LP tank at least thats what i have been told, it bassically starves the gun and you get real bad drop off.

A low pressure gun with a high pressure tank will work if the reg works. A low pressure tank may not power many guns, though. Is that right?

yes and that is the case with the ion, it is a low pressure gun but wont operate with a low pressure tank but on a marker like an ego you cant use a high pressure tank because it will damage the internals.

Thats all controlled by the regulator though. If you stuck even a low pressure tank directly to the valve of any low pressure marker, something is going to rupture. The regulator is what controls those pressures and allows tolerable operating pressures. I find it hard to beleive a regulator would need 800+ psi in order to maintane 180 psi to run the marker. Isnt this getting into recharge rate?
I'm gonna have to try this. I only buy high pressure tanks for the sake of compatibility between all my markers. Come to think of it, I bought a cp 48/4500 from a guy that ran it on his ego. Works fine on my ion. I'll check the tank's reg when I get home tonight. I'm actually not sure what the output is. I've also only run it on my ion. Havent tried it on any of the other markers yet.

Yeah I don't know how it works 100% but Ive been shopping for high end markers like bob longs and egos and the one thing i learned about them REALLY quick is they need a LP tank....
**edit** ok so after a little research on the topic of LP vs HP on an ion I found that you can in fact use a LP tank on an ion but most people recommend you use an HP tank due to the fact you can run in to issues with starving the gun with an LP tank which I do remember talking to wookie from MPS about this because I am in the process of upgrading my ion. So there you go lol

Cool! Kinda off-topic, but what are you doing to the ION??

have the qev cp on/off and cp blade trigger and a cp drop forward but i just got a bob long protege so the ion probably wont be getting many more upgrades any time soon if at all. the protege is so much lighter and with the low pressure poppet and a low pressure tank i am getting about 2000+ on a single 65/45 fill. I am going to be getting a pillow bolt, gear drive asa, and probably an led board for it and then start saving for my next marker lol... the longer you are on the team the more you will learn i am a gear sleeper.

Mmmmm... Sexy! I have a SP8 I picked up fro my wife thats basically an ION in a shell. Took it out and shot with it and was depressed to be shooting a stock ION again. Planning the usual upgrades: bolt, firing can, trigger. Really, i think thats about it. The reg, board, and QEV came upgraded already. I wasnt in the market for another ION, but the deal this guy gave me was too good to pass up. I think I traded a phantom for the SP8 plus adj. stock, sniper barrel and a whole bag of goodies. I figured since i'm trying to get into milsim (if I can only make the practices) the SP8 might come in handy.
I'm trying my hardest to stop being such a gun sleeper. I've got it down to four markers. No more!! Its just so freakin' hard to say no when you find a sweet deal!!!

yeah i got the protege for 200!!!! and let me tell you this things shoots lazers. It is so accurate and efficient, its almost 100% ball on ball. i wish i could get a mil-sim marker that was as good as a speed ball gun. The sp8, sp1, and tm7 are all good markers but still no where near a bob long or an ego.

Wow! Great find!!
Yeah, I know what you mean about wanting performance like that in a milsim. I just have a hard time forking out that kind of dough for the Miltec or something like it.
I'm actually debating about picking up an A5 just for the purpose of building a milsimmed nightmare. It kills me to go back to blowbacks though. I dont know. We'll see what happens...
